Unemploymentand other hardships caused profound social and political unrest that led inSeptember 1930, two years after the start of the second president Yrigoyen,conservatives allied with the military and directed by Jose Felix Uriburu acoup military interrupted for the first time since 1853, Argentinaconstitutional continuity, again putting the oligarchy in power. This period,known as the "Infamous Decade" (although other authors prefer to usethe term, much more sterile, "Restoration Conservative"),characterized by electoral fraud and corruption.
Economic conditions improved during thegovernment of General Augustin Pedro Justo, but political turmoil intensified,culminating in failed rebellions of the Radical Civic Union in 1933 and 1934.In 1938, in the presidential elections called to renew the charge, were electedas President Roberto MarÃa Ortiz and Ramon Castillo as Vice President, thanksto widespread electoral fraud. However, Ortiz took strong measures tostrengthen democracy: it repressed subversive activities of German agents,which had increased after the victory of National Socialism in Germany and thecountry's corrupt electoral machinery was dismantled. At the outbreak of WorldWar II, Ortiz decided to maintain the neutral position that Argentina had taken during the Great War.
