The article titled “The Slow War Speeds Up” is calibrated in a journal-type format with a paragraph written each day s or every few days from January 6
th2012 to the 22
nd. Each paragraph regards the issues in Sudan and the problems Sudanese civilians face on a day-to-day basis.
Within the “journal entries,” the author mentions the solace civilians find in the refugee camps, the official recognition of the Jonglei state as a disaster area and the discussion between northern and southern leaders. Dated January 11, the author mentions the UN’s accusations on Sudan for restricting the UN peacekeepers’ ability to monitor the incidents in Darfur. Later in the same entry, it is noted that there has been a “marked increase in the number of violent clashes between Sudanese government forces and rebels in Darfur.” January 14
th states the Sudanese Air Force killed 16 civilians in a bombing raid in South Sudan. The author mentions later in the entries that the aid agencies estimate over 400,000 civilians have been displaced since September. A day later, the South Sudanese announced its likelihood of stopping oil production due to the conflicts with the north.
Lastly, the author notes the acknowledgement of South Sudan as its own country and its intentions to receive and rely on the defense support of the United States.
This article has been very helpful. It provides my research with current events not only in Darfur but also the broader issues in Sudan as a whole (or two parts). I will most likely being looking at this article again to reference recent events and even check up on it to see if the author adds to it in the days to come.
